2009 New Laws and More


When the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, 2008, certain California laws - in name only - will magically transform into full-blown, enforceable laws. Make sure you understand your responsibilities under the new AND recently-new laws and regulations that will impact how you run your business in 2009.

Prohibits text-based communication while driving, including e-mail, and text and instant messaging.

Effective Jan. 1, 2009
Case was appealed to the California Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case.

Allows a monthly or annual salary payment to computer professionals.

Code amended to change the reporting of work related injury and illnesses.

Invalid Waivers
  • Makes null and void the execution of any release on account of wages due.
San Francisco Commuter Benefits
  • S.F.employers with 20 or more employees are required to provide qualified employees with commuter benefits.
Nutritional Information For Chain Restaurants
  • Requires chain restaurants with more than 20 or more facilities within the state of California to post nutritional information. Also adds new requirement on future dates.

  Temporary Employees
  • Affects wages for employees of temporary services employers.
San Francisco Healthcare Ordinance
  • Lets ordinance stand that mandates certain private employers pay an assigned amount of money towards employee healthcare or pay the city a fee.
Exemption for Physicians Paid on Hourly Basis
  • Increases the minimum hourly rate a physician must receive to be classified as exempt.
